I won the Welsh market treats lottery! They were having a little contest at the market today where you were supposed to find three 'misplaced' items, and then write down the stall number where they were 'hidden' and enter to win a hamper full of stuff. And I won! I actually won something! The hamper contained some thick-cut bacon, wild boar cross apple & leek sausages, chili-marinated chicken wings a big gammon joint, a Welsh black beef brisket, two pork steaks (all local and organic meats!), local Welsh honey, homemade lemon curd, orange & cider brandy marmalade, half a dozen organic free-range eggs, an asparagus quiche made with goats milk and goats cheese, a dozen welsh cakes, a loaf of lovely sundried tomato & herb artisan bread, and a big hunk o' cheese (not sure what kind but it's tasty)! Probably like £50 worth of stuff. :) So needless to say, I am somewhat off the healthy eatin' bandwagon today, heh. Once I ate a few welsh cakes it was all over! Hoozoo! I had a bunch of lemon buttercream left over from yesterday's adventures, so despite having like 1/3 a cake sitting on my table, the logical thing to do was make cupcakes! I cracked open my brand new copy of Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World, which I finally broke down and purchased after so many glowing recommendations from bakebakebake. I used actual (skim) milk instead of soy because that's what I had, though. I went with the basic vanilla cupcake recipe - it did not disappoint. So moist and tender and delicious. I am considering it as a new go-to white cake (although Starlight is sturdier and better suited to heavy icings like marzipan and such). I can't imagine it would be any less good with soy milk, either. I would recommend this book based on this recipe and the photos alone, even for omnis like myself! Well, my Ian's birthday party is today, and he requested, months ago, a lemon flavoured cake with a Lovecraftian theme. So lemon=yellow=Hastur for those in the nerd-know like myself... :V I used the recipe for New Starlight Cake (same as in this post), using lemon extract instead of vanilla, and with about 1/8th cup lemon juice substituted for so much milk, and filled the 4 layers (2 rounds sliced in half) with alternating lemon curd and lemon neo-classic buttercream. The covering and decorations are all made from golden marzipan, which he adores, so I piled it on. So, here we go... The stars are right! Well, today I had my 1-day installation at the School of Art. I titled it 'absence and essence,' for want of a better idea. I guess I'm satisfied with how it turned out, although things can always be better... It is still a work in progress, after all. I ended up using 25W bulbs, each housed in an MDF box, with the glass slides fitted in the front. The images were projected onto free-hanging paper screens. I showed 5 images, all of my mother and sister, in a rough semi-circle. It seemed like there were quite a few comments in my little envelope when I checked in at lunchtime - obviously I haven't looked at any of them yet. I hope some of them will be nice! ;) Tomorrow I'll be seeing Chris, and I hope he will be nice as well! If you are interested, video footage of the installation is available on my facebook and Youtube. There are 2 on FB, one long pass over the whole exhibit and a shorter one showing the motion of the screens; but I've only got the longer one up on Youtube at the moment. There are also some still images on facebook, which should be viewable to everyone. I welcome questions and would very much appreciate any comments/suggestions! I am in need of some plinths/pedestals for a short installation (2.5 days incl. set up and tear down) I am putting up next week. I thought the School of Art had some I could use but they have turned out to be the wrong height. What I need is 2-4 (minimum 2) of these things, waist high at the lowest, to chest high at the highest. The platform area needs to be around 10"x10" - bigger would be alright if it's not obnoxiously so. All of them must be the same size. (I guess if there was one really big table on which I could fit all my objects that might work too, but it would be a miracle to find one the right size to have all the things in their correct positions.) I really, really don't want to build these if I don't have to, as I already have to make a bunch of boxes and I don't exactly excel at carpentry, so if anyone can suggest something that I could do/use it would be extremely helpful. So, I just got back from seeing Steeleye Span at the Arts Centre! It was good times; the concert was completely sold out. It was the first date of their tour, so there were a couple of wonky bits, but overall it was excellent. They played a lot of their older stuff, which pleased me greatly, including an encore of All Around My Hat for which they got the whole audience to sing along. It was awesome. Just off the top of my head, the set list included: All Around My Hat Gone to America The Song Will Remain Bonny Black Hare Cold, Haily, Windy Night King Henry The Blacksmith Lovely on the Water Boys of Bedlam Saucy Sailor Babylon Cam Ye O'er Frae France Long Lankin (!) Van Diemen's Land It was a little weird for me, though... Steeleye Span is so connected to my mother in my head that it made me kind of emotional. Fragments of memories flashing through my brain, like her sitting in her sewing room singing along to her stereo while working on some project or other... It was hard not to think about how much she would have enjoyed the show, how she should have been there. Then Maddy Prior was selling tickets for some raffle in support of cancer research; I bought one. I had a great time though, just a little sniffy in places. Also, their drummer looks like Dumbledore.
