have you seen the yellow sign?

Well, my Ian's birthday party is today, and he requested, months ago, a lemon flavoured cake with a Lovecraftian theme. So lemon=yellow=Hastur for those in the nerd-know like myself... :V I used the recipe for New Starlight Cake (same as in this post), using lemon extract instead of vanilla, and with about 1/8th cup lemon juice substituted for so much milk, and filled the 4 layers (2 rounds sliced in half) with alternating lemon curd and lemon neo-classic buttercream. The covering and decorations are all made from golden marzipan, which he adores, so I piled it on.

So, here we go... The stars are right!

Painting the tentacles...

Some painted tentacles chillin' out... Yum!

Placing tentacles on the cake.

And a few more.

The nearly complete cake with a few tentacles in the background.

Almost done.

The finished product, and a few more close-ups!

I was quite pleased with the blood spatter!

The end!

PS: how did you make that lovely yellow "cover" for the cake?? Looks like a thick fondu? I've always wanted to try and make that.

It's golden marzipan, basically a paste made from ground almonds and sugar. You roll it out like pie crust or cookie dough or something and just lay it over the cake. I didn't have time to make it from scratch, but it's sold in stores everywhere here.
