I know it's not perfect but this is the biggest dang cake I've ever made, let alone decorated, and I wanted to share! I was asked to make this for the 15th anniversary of the LRP system I play in . It's 13x18 inches, made of 4 9x13 cakes (2 layers). Chocolate on the left, vanilla on the right, with cherry filling. The icing is white mountain flavoured with vanilla and a hint of almond extract. This was my first attempt at writing on a cake! ( Bonus: a tip for filling layer cakes )xposted from bakebakebake, natch. Emii's birthday picnic was today, and since she mentioned cookies the other night, I decided to try out Alton Brown's The Chewy. It certainly lives up to the hype... wow! Oh, btw, I used an 1/8 cup measure as I had no idea what a '#20 disher' was, and it seemed about the right size judging by what other people had suggested (thanks bakex3faq!), and it worked out great, yielding almost exactly the predicted number of cookies. I went to Shrewsbury yesterday to look for wedding shoes, and spent quite a bit more than I planned... :o There were some unexpected deals to to be had! I came away with not only the wedding shoes (plain ivory satin, medium heel), but an adorable pair of green leather wedge sandals with cute stitched designs on the heels, for £10! They are so cute in fact that if I can break them in I *might* wear them instead of the 'real' wedding ones - it would probably be asking for trouble though, they're high enough that I could really hurt myself if I turned my ankle walking down the aisle, and no one wants that! I also got a denim jacket, a new leather belt (finally), a skirt, some delicious candy, and a little something for a wedding next weekend. All in all a productive trip; thank you to John P. and some guy I don't know on the WARPS boards who directed me to the bridal shops! I'm trying not to stress about the wedding but it seems like so much is still up in the air... So many people still haven't RSVPd, and though I know I said until the end of June I am starting to worry! I haven't confirmed/sent a deposit to the sound system guy yet, because every time I've emailed him he says it's too early, but that it's no problem, etc. Dude, just take my money so I can relax! I still need to order my small 'fancy' wedding cake. The wedding favours I ordered still haven't arrived and I'm worried about being able to get my money back and get something else in time if I need to. The amount of time we have in NB before the wedding no longer seems like enough to do all that wants doing - like getting a new passport, making sure the men's and Ian's attendants' suits are sorted and ordered in time... I also keep feeling like there's something crucial I'm forgetting to do. Ian's mum called the other night to ask about rehearsal dinner stuff and I had to leave the room because it stressed me out just to hear him talking on the phone about it. I need to not get any bigger (and not too much smaller) between now and the wedding so that my dress will fit... and I've got two birthday things to go to this weekend, a wedding next weekend, a trip to Manchester after that, more birthdays and weddings and stuff in July, and the Aberddu event as well, not to mention all the time in NB surrounded by all the delicious food I've been missing - Burrito Loco, market treats, Tim's, lobster... so many opportunities to mess it all up! I won the Welsh market treats lottery! They were having a little contest at the market today where you were supposed to find three 'misplaced' items, and then write down the stall number where they were 'hidden' and enter to win a hamper full of stuff. And I won! I actually won something! The hamper contained some thick-cut bacon, wild boar cross apple & leek sausages, chili-marinated chicken wings a big gammon joint, a Welsh black beef brisket, two pork steaks (all local and organic meats!), local Welsh honey, homemade lemon curd, orange & cider brandy marmalade, half a dozen organic free-range eggs, an asparagus quiche made with goats milk and goats cheese, a dozen welsh cakes, a loaf of lovely sundried tomato & herb artisan bread, and a big hunk o' cheese (not sure what kind but it's tasty)! Probably like £50 worth of stuff. :) So needless to say, I am somewhat off the healthy eatin' bandwagon today, heh. Once I ate a few welsh cakes it was all over! Hoozoo! I had a bunch of lemon buttercream left over from yesterday's adventures, so despite having like 1/3 a cake sitting on my table, the logical thing to do was make cupcakes! I cracked open my brand new copy of Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World, which I finally broke down and purchased after so many glowing recommendations from bakebakebake. I used actual (skim) milk instead of soy because that's what I had, though. I went with the basic vanilla cupcake recipe - it did not disappoint. So moist and tender and delicious. I am considering it as a new go-to white cake (although Starlight is sturdier and better suited to heavy icings like marzipan and such). I can't imagine it would be any less good with soy milk, either. I would recommend this book based on this recipe and the photos alone, even for omnis like myself! Well, my Ian's birthday party is today, and he requested, months ago, a lemon flavoured cake with a Lovecraftian theme. So lemon=yellow=Hastur for those in the nerd-know like myself... :V I used the recipe for New Starlight Cake (same as in this post), using lemon extract instead of vanilla, and with about 1/8th cup lemon juice substituted for so much milk, and filled the 4 layers (2 rounds sliced in half) with alternating lemon curd and lemon neo-classic buttercream. The covering and decorations are all made from golden marzipan, which he adores, so I piled it on. So, here we go... The stars are right!
